چکیده

Abstract. In this paper, a two-parameter discrete Gaussian beam summation is described and then applied to SH seismic waves in a layer over a half space. For this case the exact solution for the wide-angle reflection and head wave is known by the summation of plane waves or from the modified-Cagniard method. Using Gaussian beam summations over a single angle parameter, the wide-angle reflection and head wave can be generated by using wide beam widths. By using single-parameter beam summations with less wide beams, stable solutions of the wideangle reflection can be obtained, but not the head wave solution which requires more spectral content. Here we show that both the wide-angle reflection and the head wave can be obtained when using finite beam widths by an over-determined, frame-based Gaussian beam summation over both position and wavenumber.

Seismic modeling using the frozen Gaussian approximation

We adopt the frozen Gaussian approximation (FGA) for modeling seismic waves. The method belongs to the category of ray-based beam methods. It decomposes seismic wavefield into a set of Gaussian functions and propagates these Gaussian functions along appropriate ray paths. As opposed to the classic Gaussian-beam method, FGA keeps the Gaussians frozen (at a fixed width) during the propagation pro...

Gaussian Beam Imaging for Converted and Surface Reflected Waves

An overview of Gaussian beam imaging is given for converted and surface reflected seismic waves. The earthquake seismology community now regularly uses seismic waves from distant sources to illuminate structures beneath seismic arrays in so-called passive imaging experiments. Similarly, reservoir structures can be imaged with seismic waves incident from below using sources in boreholes. Gaussia...

Calculation of Synthetic Seismograms with Gaussian Beams

In this paper, an overview of the calculation of synthetic seismograms using the Gaussian beam method is presented accompanied by some representative applications and new extensions of the method. Since caustics are a frequent occurrence in seismic wave propagation, modifications to ray theory are often necessary. In the Gaussian beam method, a summation of paraxial Gaussian beams is used to de...

ulerian Gaussian beams for high-frequency wave propagation

We design an Eulerian Gaussian beam summation method for solving Helmholtz equations in the high-frequency regime. The traditional Gaussian beam summation method is based on Lagrangian ray tracing and local ray-centered coordinates. We propose a new Eulerian formulation of Gaussian beam theory which adopts global Cartesian coordinates, level sets, and Liouville equations, yielding uniformly dis...
